About Us

Mandate Health Empowerment Initiative (MHEI) is a CAC registered nongovernmental non-profit organisation. We’re centred on promoting mental health and psychosocial support, especially for pregnant women, school-age children and internally displaced persons, through advocacy, capacity building, training, counselling, outreach and early intervention.

Our strengths are in capacity building, information & training, Stress Management/Counselling, mental health and drug/Substance Abuse.

Guiding Principles and core values include transparency, equality and fairness, integrity, hard work, focus, accountability and compassion

The Mandate Health Empowerment Initiative have organised outreaches, health promotions and mental health campaigns. We have collaborated and partnered with Federal Government agencies, other private stakeholders and international non-governmental organisations.

MHEI Objectives

MHEI aims to fulfil the following objectives by 2010:

  • Improve quality of life during the prenatal and postnatal stages of pregnancy for women suffering from mental health conditions through therapy and counselling.
  • Secure partnership with Federal Ministry of Health for the inclusion of improved mental health and psychosocial support content in the Corps members NYSC Training Programme, aiming for optimal service year productivity.
  • Promote prenatal mental health training informed by best psychosocial support practice guidelines across Nigeria.
  • Contribute to the reduction of Pre/Post-natal Depression and Anxiety and its associated consequences during the prenatal and postnatal stages of pregnancy by actively involving mental health and psychosocial support services in antenatal sections of government and private hospitals.
  • Organise advocacy and awareness campaigns on mental health and psychosocial support issues affecting government public primary and secondary schools.
  • Provide useful information/early warning signals for measuring progress in the implementation of mental health reform practices in Nigeria.
  • Canvass the need for a national framework for provision of mental health and psychosocial support, giving equal priority to mental health in the federal budget.
  • Carry out awareness creation on infant mental health and nutrition at various developmental stages.

Mental Health Forum


Our television program, Mental Health Forum, runs every weekday (Monday to Friday) from 10am to 11am on Africa Health Television.

Our mission is to make Nigeria and Africa a place where people are conscious of their mental health conditions and enjoy wellbeing by deploying our expertise to ensure timely and appropriate sensitisation, training, counselling (including tele-healthcare) and psychosocial support interventions and collaborating with state and nonstate actors.
